Throughout your product development, we get your device into the hands of your users to make your product safer and easier to use. Learn how we do this with formative and summative usability testing.

Formative Testing

Formative usability testing is a highly cost and time effective way to quickly surface shortcomings and areas for improvement in your product throughout the design process. The purpose of formative usability testing is to;

    • Learn how to encourage correct use of your product quickly, early and economically
    • Use different types of testing to figure out which design features are useful and which are not

Formative testing is generally conducted;

    • Multiple times throughout the product development process
    • As soon as low fidelity prototypes or mock-ups become available

Sento are experts in planning, executing and reporting formative testing to observe and record user feedback relating to your product. This will inform your product and the design decisions you make during the development process. We also highlight any new risks, design recommendations and risk mitigation steps.

Summative Testing

Summative usability testing, also referred to as human factors validation, is a highly effective way to validate that your product meets its user’s needs. Product validation is a regulatory requirement for any medical device across all regions. Summative testing is generally conducted;

    • Once the design, development and verification of your product is complete
    • The final (commercial) version of your product, and its components (if applicable), are available

Sento are experts in planning, executing and reporting on summative studies. The results give you validation data on your product and prove your device is safe to use by its intended user(s) and meet regulatory requirements. We also have strategic partnerships with various test facilities and experienced recruitment agencies, in Australia and the US, to recruit suitable participants for the studies and manage all testing logistics.

The Difference Between Formative & Summative Testing

Both formative and summative testing involve a planning, execution and reporting phase and generate key documentation for your Design History File (DHF) and regulatory (technical file) submission.

Think of formative testing as ‘informal’ testing of your product during the product development and design process. Formative assessments generally involve:

    • Evaluating a limited number of product features, prioritised by the potential risk they present to the user or patient
    • Low – medium fidelity prototypes (i.e., content-driven clickable wireframes, foam or cardboard physical models)
    • Representative, or non-representative, end-users
    • Simulated use environments
    • Small sample size; ~5 – 10 participants
    • Qualitative user data
    • 4 – 6 weeks from planning to reporting

Summative testing is considered ‘formal’ testing of your product at the end of the product development and design process. Summative assessments generally involve:

    • Evaluating all product features and all product components
    • High fidelity models (i.e., final commercial product or equivalent)
    • Representative end-users
    • Actual, or simulated, use environments
    • Large sample size; 15+ participants
    • A mix of qualitative and quantitative user data
    • Minimum of ~3 months from planning to reporting

Sento have developed leading assessment strategies through our experience working with a range of clients and medical devices. We can help you figure out when it makes sense to conduct formative and/or summative assessments on your product. To learn more, or even just ask questions, we’d love to help. Contact us today.
